JemCon Rules and RegulationsBy purchasing a JemCon convention weekend membership (badge) you have agreed to follow the rules and guidelines set forth by JemCon in the program book and in other places. You also acknowledge that, if you are responsible for breaking a rule, your membership may be revoked and you may be asked to leave the convention by a member of the JemCon staff.
JemCon Rules of Conduct
Any persons found breaking the following rules risks revocation of their memberships (badges).
- All children aged 12 years and under must be accompanied by an adult at all convention events. Should any theft or damage to personal property (including but not limited to vendors displays, convention displays, collectibles, convention or hotel equipment, and convention-goers costumes and props) be incurred by a child, his or her legal guardian will be held liable for all theft / damages and will be detained for the local police department.
- All convention attendees will wear their badges at all times during convention events. Should any theft or damage to personal property (including but not limited to vendors displays, convention displays, collectibles, convention or hotel equipment, and convention goers costumes and props) be incurred by a convention attendee, said attendee will be held liable for all theft / damages and will be detained for the local police department.
- Play-fighting, horseplay, or running in a crowded area are all bad ideas in a crowded space like JemCon.
- Please keep noise in your rooms down during evening hours or take your activities to a public area of the hotel. If the convention or the hotel receives a noise complaint from your room, the JemCon staff will give you a reminder to quieten down. On the third noise complaint to your room over the length of the convention, which includes Friday night through to Sunday night, you will be ejected from your room, asked to leave hotel property, and your money will not be refunded. In addition, your membership (badge) will be revoked.
- Please be respectful of hotel property. Any persons found dropping items from indoor or outdoor balconies or defacing hotel, convention meeting space, or convention property will have their memberships (badges) revoked, ejected from their hotel room, and will be referred to hotel security and / or the local police department. In addition, you will be presented to the hotel staff, and will be held financially liable for any and all damages to hotel property.
- Please show consideration for all guests at JemCon. Harassment of guests will not be permitted and will result in having your membership (badge) revoked and security called.
- Video-taping and photography is allowed in all common areas at JemCon, but we ask attendees to please refrain from using flash photography during any of the main panels. We also ask that you be respectful of any attendees who do not wish to be photographed.
- No video-taping or recording of audio during JemCon guest panels without permission from JemCon staff and the guest.
If it's against the law outside the convention, it's still against the law inside the convention. This includes, but is not limited to:
- Smoking is allowed only in designated smoking areas outside the hotel.
- No alcohol unless you are aged 21 years or over and can present some form of government issued identification.
For those aged 21 years and over, please be responsible when you drink, and follow all rules at the hotel regarding where alcohol consumption is allowed. Open containers of alcohol are not allowed in the public areas or convention space at JemCon. Violation of these rules may result in the
confiscation of the alcohol and / or revocation of the possessor's membership (badge). If any persons under 21 years of age are found with alcohol in their possession, the local police department will be notified and those persons, along with the persons who provided them with alcohol, will have their memberships (badges) revoked, ejected from any hotel sleeping rooms, and will be detained for the local police department.
- If you have a room party where alcohol is being consumed, all persons attending the party must be 21 years of age or over. Please check identification to avoid misunderstandings. Hosting a room party that is harboring underage drinking may result in revocation of your membership (badge), ejection from the hotel, and / or detainment for the local police department.
- No illegal drugs or drug paraphernalia. The use of recreational drugs will not be allowed inside the hotel or JemCon areas.
Any persons found possessing or using illegal drugs or related paraphernalia on convention space and grounds will have their memberships (badges) revoked. You will also be asked to vacate the hotel room you are occupying, and will be detained for the local police department.
- JemCon follows the curfew laws of the hosting city. All persons aged 17 years or under, unless registered guests of the hotel or accompanied by a legal guardian, must leave hotel grounds by 11:00pm. If you are an unaccompanied minor and are engaging in any prohibited activity on convention grounds, the local police department will be called.
JemCon encourages cosplay - we like to see the fans and con-goers support the culture that we love and are a part of. So, when you make your costume choices, be creative but please remember the following things:
- These rules apply to hallways and convention spaces. For details concerning masquerade entry rules, please refer to the Masquerade section of the program guide.
- No lewd or vulgar remarks in any language.
- The costume must conform to local laws concerning indecent exposure.
- Props cannot be longer than four feet (4') in length.
If your prop is close to four feet in length, you may come to the JemCon Con Suite to have it checked. In addition, a JemCon staff member may ask you to accompany him or her to the JemCon Con Suite to have your prop checked. If you are stopped by the JemCon staff after the prop is marked, just show them that you have already had it checked.
- If you, your costume, or your costume prop is responsible for any damage to the convention meeting space or hotel, you will be held personally responsible and billed accordingly for the resulting damage.
- Costumes may not have any harmful protrusions such as spikes or sharp edges.
If your costume has any parts that extend more than six inches from the surface of your costume or that may injure passersby in a crowded hallway, please take care to remove them.
- Functional (and prop/play/replica) weapons are not allowed at JemCon.
JemCon also prohibits live steel, meaning any object crafted from any metal with a pointed end or blade-like edge, blunt or sharp. No compound bows, crossbows, or traditionally strung bows are allowed. If your costume calls for a bow, it must be a simple bow strung with a flimsy material such as yarn or twine. If you are worried about whether your prop may be considered realistic, please come to the JemCon Con Suite and have it checked. If you do not and are found carrying weapon replicas or live steel, your props will be confiscated permanently, and local law enforcement may be called.
In short, if you are handling your prop in a safe and responsible manner, you should have no problems.
If you are law enforcement personnel and are required to carry a firearm, please ask the JemCon Con Suite to contact the JemCon staff so the convention will be informed of your presence and there will be no confusion.
In Closing...
Please exercise common sense, consideration, and responsibility for your fellow fans, the hotel staff, convention staff, and other guests of the hotel. This makes a better convention experience for everyone. Please realize that the JemCon staff are here to ensure that you have a safe and enjoyable JemCon experience. If you feel unsafe at any time, please find a JemCon staff member and they will be able to help you.
